How Casino Bonus Terms Work (And How to Price Them)

Comparison of two bonus offers by their wagering requirements

This page explains how bonus terms work. It does not list current offers. At the last check the operator's addresses did not load, so any specific figure published here would be unverifiable. Bonus terms should be read on the operator's own page, where they are binding.

The only number that matters

A bonus headline — "100% up to 500" — describes what you receive. The wagering requirement describes what you must do with it, and that is where the value is decided. Compare two offers on a deposit of 100:

Offer A Offer B
Headline 100% up to 100 50% up to 50
Bonus received 100 50
Wagering 40× bonus 10× bonus
Turnover required 4,000 500
Expected cost at 4% edge about 160 about 20
Net expectation negative positive-ish, before other terms

The offer that looks twice as generous is the worse one, by a wide margin. This calculation takes thirty seconds and is the single most useful thing to do with any bonus offer.

How to calculate it yourself

  1. Find the multiplier and what it applies to — bonus only, or deposit plus bonus. The latter doubles the requirement.
  2. Multiply to get the required turnover.
  3. Multiply the turnover by the house edge of the games you will actually play (about 4% for typical slots).
  4. Compare that expected cost with the bonus amount. If it is larger, the bonus has negative value on its own terms.

"40× deposit + bonus" on a 100 deposit with a 100 bonus is 8,000 of turnover, not 4,000. This wording difference doubles the requirement and is easy to skim past.

The terms that void bonuses

  • Maximum bet while wagering — often around 5. One larger spin can forfeit the entire bonus and its winnings.
  • Game contribution — slots usually 100%, table games 10% or less, some games excluded entirely.
  • Expiry — commonly 7 to 30 days. An unreachable requirement inside a short window is functionally a decline.
  • Maximum conversion — a cap on what can be withdrawn from bonus winnings, regardless of the amount won.
  • Excluded payment methods — deposits by certain e-wallets frequently do not qualify at all.

Free spins, read properly

A free spins offer has four parameters and the headline count is the least important of them: the value of each spin, the eligible titles, the wagering applied to winnings, and the validity period. Two hundred spins at minimum stake with a 40× requirement can be worth less than twenty spins with no wagering at all.

Loyalty and VIP schemes

Tiers advance on amount staked, not on winnings, which is why a losing player can climb quickly. The benefits — cashback, faster withdrawals, a dedicated contact — are real, and so is the fact that reaching them requires turnover. Reading a tier as a reason to keep playing is responding exactly as the structure is designed.

Before accepting any bonus

  1. Decide whether you want the bonus at all. Declining leaves the balance withdrawable at any time, which is often worth more than the bonus.
  2. Read the maximum bet rule and set your stake below it.
  3. Check the game contribution table against what you actually play.
  4. Note the expiry date in a calendar rather than in your head.
  5. Keep the terms page as a saved file — terms change, and the version you accepted is the one that governs.

Quick answers

Why is a bigger bonus often worse?

Because the wagering requirement usually scales with it, and the expected cost of the turnover can exceed the bonus.

What is the most common reason a bonus is forfeited?

Exceeding the maximum bet while wagering is still active.

Do table games clear wagering?

Usually at a heavily reduced rate, sometimes not at all. Check the contribution table.

Where are this operator's current offers?

On the operator's own page. None could be verified here, and inventing figures would make this page useless.
